Higashida means “Eastern rice paddy” in Japanese. The colors and texture are derived from a photo that I took of a terraced rice paddy while en route to Nagarkote from Kathmandu, Nepal. The square shapes are meant to suggest the pixels that comprise a digital image. When I first started working as a web designer, I would often look at digital images at great magnification as part of my work. I found that the patterns and color palettes of the magnified digital images were really striking, especially when they became disassociated with the representative image and expressed pure abstraction. This rug an also be done in the natural palette of undyed wool colors.
